Costumes

There are a variety of Halloween costumes for both adults and children. So we decided to list out a few of them here (along with some of their character traits) in order to help you decide.  If you are ready to find your costume, you can get adult costumes here and children’s costumes here.

BIG BIRD

Big Bird is an 8 foot, 2 inch yellow bird that lives in a nest behind 123 Sesame Street.  No one knows what type of bird Big Bird is actually, since different fun answers have always been used in response to the question.  Big Bird is age 6 and is best friends with Snuffy (Mr. Snuffleupagus).  Big Bird makes friends easily and is often used by the show’s writers to teach children lessons about life.  Big Bird has been on the show from the first episode.

BERT AND ERNIE

Bert and Ernie are roommates in a basement apartment of 123 Sesame Street.  Ernie plays the naive, practical joking troublemaker while Bert is the serious, studious friend.  They were the first Muppets to appear in the pilot episodes of Sesame Street, and the comic duo is still at the heart of the show.  If you are interested in buying one of these costumes, you should know that Ernie is often seen with his rubber duckie and Bert has a pet pigeon named Bernice.

COOKIE MONSTER

This Sesame Street character with blue fur and googly eyes loves to eat!  Cookie Monster will eat practically anything, except for sardine ice cream.  We all know the favorite food of Cookie Monster, though.  Cookie Monster is used to teach children good eating habits – and has even recently come to admit that vegetables are good and that cookies are only a sometimes food.  If you are going to dress as Cookie Monster for Halloween, you should know that Halloween is just two days before Cookie Monster’s birthday – November 2nd.  His favorite cookies are chocolate chip (followed by the second favorite, oatmeal).  And his famous phrases are – “Me want cookie.” And “me eat cookie.”

OSCAR THE GROUCH

This furry, green grouch lives in a trash can between 123 Sesame Street and Big Bird’s nest.  He hoards useless items and openly admits that he does not like anything or anybody (except for small children).  His first line on television was, “Don’t bang on my can! Go away.”

Oscar the Grouch has been known to show occasional acts of kindness towards others and is sometimes carried from place to place by his friend Bruno the Trashman.  If you are going to wear this costume, you should also know that Oscar is actually orange, but is covered in moss, mold, and slime which gives him his green appearance.  For the first year of the show, Oscar was orange rather than green.

THE COUNT

Count von Count is a friendly vampire-like creature that loves to count.  He may be a distant relative of Count Dracula, but has never turned into a bat or demonstrated a fondness for blood.

ELMO

Elmo is a 3.5 year old furry fire engine red monster with big eyes and an orange nose.  Elmo generally refers to himself in the 3rd person.  Elmo was originally called Baby Monster and has been around since the 1970s.  But it wasn’t until the 1990s that Elmo hit as a truly popular Sesame Street character.  In the 1996 Christmas season, Elmo became the must have toy when Tickle Me Elmo toys were flying off the shelves faster than stores could stock them.
